Ask the Optometrist

Ever wanted to ask an optometrist about your eyes or any problems you are having with them? Here is your chance, with our newly launched "Ask the Optometrist" page. To ask one of our resident optoms a question, register with EasySpecsOnline.com, and leave a comment in the space provided. They will reply to you directly and may also put your question up here for others to view. This service is completely free to registered users.

Do you supply varifocals / multifocals?

Yes we do, but only in the JHB area (for now) that is why that lens option is not enabled on our frames. If you are in JHB, we can assist. Please contact us to make arrangements. Our prices are the best by far.

Can I claim back from medical aid?

Yes you can, starting January 2009.

Can I claim back sunglasses from medical aid?

Sorry, you may not claim back sunglasses from your medical aid, by law.

How do other optometrists in South Africa feel about EasySpecsOnline.com?

We get asked this a lot. In fact, we get a lot of calls from optometrists pretending to be customers. Who knows why. We always tell them the same thing. We are providing a service to South Africans, just like them. We believe in selling prescription eyewear at a fair price. Will every person in South Africa buy from us? Of course not. Many people will never be comfortable with buying specs online, even with our amazing guarantees. Thankfully, we have good relations with many optometrists in the industry and we hope to keep that up.

Why is this section so short?

This service is not about general optometric or eye care info. It is a specific service aimed an answering specific questions that we have been asked. There is more than enough general info out there online.

When did you start this service?

October 2008

Can I use my contact lens prescription to have glasses made?

The simple answer is not necessarily. The two prescriptions may be are different. However, your local optometrist who did your eye-test will have your full prescription on record, so you do not have to go for a new eye-test, just get your optometrist to forward it to you. Remember, your script belongs to you.

How often should I get an eye-test?

We recommend 1 to 2 years between full eye-tests. Even though your eyes may feel fine and you think they have not changed, this does not mean that there is a lack of refractive error or certain pathology. Rather be safe than sorry.

How do I know you guys have got my order right?

One of the resident optoms will check your specs when they come back from our lab before we send them out to you.

I went from normal thickness lenses to thinner lenses in my glasses. Is it normal to experience some distortion?

The refractive index of a thinned lens is different to that of a thicker lens. This means that you may well experience distortion as your eyes get used to the thinner lenses. Some of our patients have found that this may last a couple of days until their eyes adjust. If it lasts more than 5 days, contact us and we make sure that you receive professional assistance.

If my eyes are hurting, does it mean that I need glasses? What should I do?

It is very common these days for people who work with computers a lot to experience eye-strain. Often all you need is to take your eyes off the screen and do something else in between PC work. In our office, we have started getting up and walking to other departments instead of just picking up the phone, when we can. It might mean that we cannot communicate as quickly, but it has reduced headache causing eye-strain and gives us a good break from staring at computer screens. This may be what you are experiencing but it is no substitute for getting a qualified eye care practitioner from checking you out. If you need specs, they will be able to provide you with an eye-test and prescription. If you would like to be able to afford them, you already know where to go.
